Chokana: The Nostalgic Display Font That Recharges Your Brand

I was staring at a blank brand board for a small-batch skincare project. The mood board was full of warm terracotta pots, minimalist glass jars, and earthy textures, but the typography was lacking. I needed something that felt organic, but also carried a bit of playful personality. The client’s keywords were "handcrafted," "authentic," and "a little bit of fun." I started scrolling through my display fonts and landed on Chokana.

The Instant 70s Warm-Up

Right away, Chokana does exactly what it promises: it delivers a lovely retro vibe. The font isn't a loud, stereotypical disco typeface. Instead, it feels like the warm, approachable lettering you might find on a vintage café sign or a handmade boutique label from that era. Its multi-line display nature gives each character a built-in texture and weight, making even a single word feel substantial. I dropped "Bloom" into a logo concept, and immediately, the design had a centerpiece. The characters have a charming, slightly uneven quality that suggests craftsmanship, which was perfect for the skincare brand’s ethos.

On the brand board, I tested it against a clean, modern sans-serif for body text. The contrast was striking and effective. Chokana held its own as the primary logo font and for key headlines on packaging mockups. Its personality is distinctly joyful and optimistic, which makes it excellent for brands wanting to convey warmth and familiarity.

Putting Chokana Through Real Branding Work

Moving beyond the initial sketch, I applied Chokana across several key assets to see how it performed.

The font’s strength lies in these display applications. It influences brand perception by injecting a specific mood—nostalgic, friendly, optimistic—with just a few words. It ensures visual hierarchy by naturally commanding attention, making it perfect for the most important piece of information in any layout.

Where Chokana Shines and Where to Be Cautious

Chokana is unequivocally a display font. It’s best used for logos, headlines, short phrases, and accent text. Think brand names, product titles on packaging, hero statements on a website, or bold captions on social posts.

It is not suitable for body text. Paragraphs, long product descriptions, menu items, or any lengthy copy would become difficult to read due to its detailed multi-line structure. It also wouldn't fit a formal corporate identity seeking a sleek, minimalist, or authoritative feel. The nostalgia and playfulness are baked in.

Always test Chokana on your actual mockups. See how it renders on your chosen print material or on different screen backgrounds. Check its legibility at the exact size you intend to use. Because of its style, very small sizes (like fine print on a label) can cause the lines to blur, so maintain sufficient scale.

Building a Typography System with Chokana

Chokana shouldn’t work alone. For a cohesive brand identity, you need to pair it with a supporting typeface.

The pairing creates balance. Let Chokana be the star for key moments, and let your neutral sans-serif or serif handle all the practical communication.

A Few Practical Notes for Working with Chokana

Since it’s inspired by the 70s aesthetic, explore any included alternates or ligatures to add even more custom flair to your logo. Check the font files for multilingual support if your project requires it. Confirm the available file formats (OTF, TTF) and webfont availability (WOFF, WOFF2) if you plan to use it on a live website.

Most importantly, before using Chokana in any final client work—whether for a permanent brand identity, packaging, merchandise, or a website—review the commercial font license. Understand the terms for usage in commercial projects, templates, or digital products. This is a crucial step to protect your work and your client's investment.

The Right Project for This Font

Chokana is a solution for brands that want to stand out with warmth and character. It’s perfect for creative studios, boutique shops, cafes, bakeries, handmade product lines, skincare or wellness brands, and local restaurants looking for a friendly, memorable identity. It gives you a shortcut to a specific emotional resonance—nostalgic joy.

In my skincare project, it provided the perfect typographic anchor. It transformed the brand board from a collection of images into a coherent visual story. It’s a font that does a lot of the mood-setting work for you, provided you use it in its intended role. If you have a project that needs a bright caption or an unforgettable logo with a lovely retro heart, testing Chokana on your mockup is a very good idea.
